Palai (commonly called Pala) is a town situated on the banks of the Meenachil River in Kottayam district, Kerala. The name is believed to have come from the pala tree (Alstonia scholaris), once abundant in the area. It lies in the central Travancore region, historically important for trade, religion, and culture.. The Meenachil River flows through present-day Kottayam district and nourishes fertile lands around Palai, Ettumanoor, Kottayam, and Kumarakom. From ancient times, this valley was ideal for growing black pepper, along with other spices like ginger, cardamom, and turmeric. Pepper became the main cash crop of the region before rubber cultivation spread in the 20th century.
